HoneyBear Ranch came to be in March of 2005. Phil and I had fallen in love with the Broken Bow area and bought "the ranch" as a place to retire and follow our dreams. Both of us have always wanted to raise our own food and be as self-sufficient as possible. The idea for the Market Garden came not long after we moved in. We opened for business in June of 2006. Our first year taught us a great deal about what people in this area want.
We added a hoop house at the end of 2007, an indoor sales area in 2008, a larger plant starting greenhouse in 2009, and a Garden Center in 2010.
The name of our place came from our Granddaughter, Madison. Her Daddy told her that grandpa was a bear, as in gruff and tough. Madison disagreed. She thinks Grandpa is a "Honey Bear!"
Phil has done a little of everything in his life. He can build anything he sets his mind to. He is an outstanding gourmet cook and has owned and operated a restaurant or two. He served his country in the Marines during Viet Nam and Desert Storm. Phil has a very green thumb and can coax plants to grow in the rockiest of soils. All the animals of HoneyBear Ranch love him and follow him everywhere - especially if he has a feed bucket in his hand!
Sandy has been digging in the dirt since she was two. Her idea of heaven is planting seeds and watching them grow. She has been an RN and is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Until 2007 she worked full time as a hospice chaplain. When the company she was working for closed the local office, she took it as a sign to go home to "the ranch" and dig in the dirt for good. In the summer you will find her in the kitchen canning sauces, jellies and other good things that are available for purchase in the HoneyBear Ranch store.
